During the Rwandan genocide against the Tutsi, 800,000 people were slaughtered in Rwanda by Hutu extremists. The genocide was detrimental to the people and the environment. However, the willingness of survivors to forgive their perpetrators was eye-opening and I developed a new perspective on trauma. As of 2019, approximately 63% of the population of Rwanda was under the age of 24. Therefore, only 3% of the population was over the age of 65 years old. This image is important because the three people captured are from different age groups and in 1994 this was unimaginable. My goal when I made images in Rwanda was to capture moments that aimed to tell a story that didn’t exploit my subjects. I intentionally make my audience work through the ghostly figures that represent the older generations before looking at the child. I learned from a psychologist in Rwanda that many survivors passed down their trauma to their children.
