With Liberty and Justice for SomeWith Liberty and Justice for Some
silver tarp, exacto knife, clear string, and red & blue lightbulbs 2019 With Liberty and Justice for Some, honors the people who have died in US immigration detention centers. I cut the names of individuals, who died while in detention during 2019, into silver fabric that is evocative of the thermal mylar blankets used in the detention centers. Cutting into this fabric was very hard and at times I found my arms and neck being in pain from cutting precisely for hours. As I cut out each individual name, I told myself that I had to keep going because the amount of pain I was feeling could not compare to the pain these people endured on their last days of life. The final piece is suspended from the ceiling at all four corners, so their names cast a shadow in red, white, and blue. The names become less clear as they get closer to the floor and begin to disappear in a ghostly manner. This piece means a lot to me because similar to an altar I am honoring life that was lost at the hands of other people.
